About This Event

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease affecting all age groups. This webinar reviews the pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy commonly used to treat diabetes, discusses drugs used along with their adverse drug reactions and drug interactions, reviews oral manifestations and complications (dental caries, periodontal disease, fungal infection, salivary dysfunction), and covers common medical emergencies that may be encountered in the dental office. The course is a live webinar presented by Aviv Ouanounou, BSc, MSC, DDS, FACD, FICO, FICD, an associate professor at the University of Toronto, and is designated for 1.5 Continuing Dental Education hours by the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the prevalence, incidence and etiology of diabetes mellitus.
  • Understand (a) the pathophysiology and (b) pharmacotherapy of diabetes.
  • Understand some of the common complications such as dental caries, periodontal disease, fungal infection and salivary dysfunction.
  • Introduce the appropriate procedures in dental practice required to optimize dental care for the patient with diabetes.
  • Recognize and manage medical emergencies in these patients.
