Louisiana Adult Sedation Review Course
About This Event
This 6-hour Adult Moderate Sedation Update Course is designed for dentists who currently hold a Louisiana permit for moderate sedation to fulfill Louisiana State Board of Dentistry continuing education requirements. The course provides a comprehensive review of enteral and parenteral moderate sedation principles, recent advances, relevant physiology, sedation techniques and pharmacology, patient assessment and selection, patient monitoring, airway management, emergency preparedness and response, and current Louisiana regulatory expectations. The format includes didactic review and case-based learning, with emphasis on best practices and updated professional standards. Schedule (CST): 8:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Course Begins; 12:00–12:30 p.m. Lunch; 12:30–3:00 p.m. Course.
Learning Objectives
- List the current requirements and updates to the Louisiana Administrative Code and Dental Practice Act regarding moderate sedation
- List current recommendations and updates to sedation standards by the ADA and ASA
- Describe principles of patient evaluation, case selection, and risk assessment for moderate sedation in adults
- Discuss pharmacology and proper administration of selected sedation drugs, including new medications
- Discuss precautions, indications, contraindications and adverse reactions of selected drugs
- Discuss prevention, recognition and management of complications associated with moderate sedation
- Describe a protocol for management of emergencies in the dental office and list required emergency drugs and equipment
- Discuss principles of ACLS or equivalent dental sedation/anesthesia emergency course
- Demonstrate ability to diagnose and treat emergencies related to deeper-than-intended sedation.
