Advances and Trends in Dental Restorative Materials and Safety

April 24, 2026

About This Event

This lecture course will be a live webinar offered through Zoom, which enables you to participate from anywhere in the country. This live interactive webinar will count towards in-person instructional hours per the Dental Board of California. However, this may vary for license renewal in other states. It is the responsibility of each participant to verify the requirements of his/her state licensing board. The main reason for the replacement of resin composite restorations is secondary caries. The development of secondary caries is multifactorial; however, recent science has shown that the resin and adhesive systems increase the susceptibility of building a more acidogenic tooth biofilm. This live webinar will include a brief overview of the high prevalence of caries around resin composite restorations, an update of dental adhesive systems and resin composites and a description of restorative techniques that will improve sealing and placement of direct resin composite restorations. Dr. Bedran-Russo will discuss the recent advances of bioactive materials in preventive and restorative dentistry and will uncover the fundamental characteristics that make a material bioactive. She will also briefly review aspects of the safety of dental materials that have received broad coverage in the news, enabling you to better communicate with your patients.

Learning Objectives

  • To identify current pitfalls with resin composite restorations leading to secondary caries
  • To develop an understanding of technological advancements of dental adhesives and resin composites and the limitations and strategies to improve sealing and strength of direct restorations in daily practice
  • To gain a true understanding of what defines a bioactive material
  • To review and differentiate types of pulp protection materials and useful clinical tips for placement
  • To recognize topics of safety in dental biomaterials, including fluoride safety and the release of plastics from direct restorations.
