About This Event

This course reviews contemporary information related to HIV and oral health and the impact on overall health and Ending the Epidemic. Topics include demographics of HIV in the U.S. and Florida, barriers to care, HIV etiology and life cycle, modes of transmission and risks for dental providers, common oral manifestations and therapies, current antiretroviral therapies with side effects and drug interactions, PrEP and PEP, and how oral health care affects HIV outcomes. Designed for both recent graduates and experienced providers; includes instructor Mark Schweizer, DDS, MPH. NSU-CDM designates this activity for 2 continuing education credit.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the overall demographics of HIV in the United States and Florida
  • Identify three barriers to care for patients with HIV
  • Describe the etiology and life cycle of the HIV virus and infection
  • List the modes of transmission for HIV and the risks for dental providers
  • Identify common oral manifestation of HIV and appropriate therapies
  • Understand current ART theories available for patients, their side effects and drug interactions
