Local Anesthesia for Dental Hygienists
About This Event
The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners authorizes trained registered dental hygienists to monitor and administer local anesthesia. This course fulfills MSBDE educational requirements and prepares participants for the CDCA written local anesthesia examination. Format includes two days of didactic learning with hands-on demonstrations, a written examination, and a third day of clinical proficiency testing where participants administer local anesthesia to a lab partner. Course work includes readings, homework, and required documentation (license, CPR, medical history, consent/hold harmless forms). Participants must pass written and clinical exams with a score of 75 or greater.

- Discuss and describe the anatomy and neurophysiology of pain and pain control
- Determine the pharmacology of anesthetic agents and vasoconstrictors
- Recognize medical history status and administration of local anesthesia
- Demonstrate local anesthesia techniques
- Discuss the use of topical anesthetics and demonstrate proper administration
- List steps taken in an emergency
- Utilize proper infection control
- Recognize proper prevention, recognition and management of complications
- Administer local anesthesia in practice
