Nitrous Oxide: Certification Course

About This Event

This comprehensive Nitrous Oxide Certification Course prepares general dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants to confidently administer and monitor nitrous oxide-oxygen psychosedation in the office setting. The program combines didactic review (12 hours of home-study to meet ADA guidelines) with instructor-led clinical instruction and hands-on practice, including participants receiving nitrous oxide during training. Topics covered include respiratory physiology, pharmacology of nitrous oxide, anesthesia states, delivery system characteristics, indications/contraindications, complications, and a clinical protocol for use. A pre- and post-test are given for certification. Participants must purchase and read the required textbook (“Handbook of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Sedation, 5e”) and complete online coursework prior to the course. Sessions are offered at UF College of Dentistry (Gainesville) and UF St. Petersburg Dental Center (Seminole).

  • Know the history and characteristics of Nitrous Oxide Sedation
  • Know the basic respiratory physiology, including the uptake and distribution of gases
  • Know the states of anesthesia and phases of State I Anesthesia
  • Know the pharmacology, and physiology of Nitrous Oxide
  • Know the indications, contraindications, and complications of inhalation analgesia
  • Know the characteristics of the Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen delivery system
  • Know a clinical protocol for the use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation
