About This Event

This six-hour course is a review and update of moderate sedation for pediatric patients, intended to provide dentists with the basic knowledge and core competencies that promote safe and effective dental sedation in children. Topics include patient selection and risk assessment, the general approach to procedural sedation in pediatric dentistry, sedation monitoring, sedative drug pharmacology, and recognition and management of common sedation-related adverse events. The course meets Louisiana State Board of Dentistry requirements for renewal of a moderate sedation permit for pediatric patients. Schedule (CST): 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.; Lunch break 12:00–12:30 p.m.; 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Instructor: Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess the suitability of moderate sedation for the delivery of dental care for pediatric patients
  • Differentiate pediatric anatomy and physiology in contrast to an adult patient
  • Apply basic behavior guidance for the pediatric dental patient to augment moderate sedation
  • Utilize weight-based dosages of sedation medications used in pediatric sedation and emergency management
  • Assess the scope of moderate sedation for children with special healthcare needs/ non-ASA I patients
  • Understand the role of inhalational nitrous oxide in augmenting pediatric dental sedations
  • Understand the role and safety limits of local anesthetics when used for pediatric dental sedations
  • Manage sedation-related emergencies that can occur in pediatric patients
