
Anesthesia/Sedation Assistant Monitoring
About This Event
Clinical Certification Course for Dental Auxiliary. This course meets Illinois Dental Practice Act requirements and includes lecture and clinical exposure completed at one of the two dental schools in Illinois. Topics include anatomy and physiology related to monitoring and airway maintenance, physiology of respiratory/cardiovascular/neurological systems as related to anesthesia and sedation, health questionnaire and ASA classification, levels of sedation/anesthesia, monitoring blood pressure/pulse/respirations/temperature/level of consciousness, operation of automated monitoring devices (EKG and pulse-oximeter), completion of anesthesia record, and basic management protocols for anesthesia-related emergencies. A certificate of completion will be issued. Prerequisite: current BLS for healthcare providers. Signed affidavits and CPR/BLS cards must be uploaded when registering.
Learning Objectives
- Become familiar with anatomy and physiology involved with monitoring and airway maintenance in the sedated dental patient.
- Obtain a basic understanding of the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems as they relate to anesthesia and sedation.
- Become familiar with the health questionnaire and its application and link to ASA classification.
- Understand levels of sedation/anesthesia and recognize them.
- Acquire skills for monitoring sedated patients: BP, pulse, respirations, temperature, level of consciousness.
- Learn to operate automated monitoring devices including EKG and pulse-oximeter.
- Learn to complete the anesthesia record and make appropriate monitoring entries.
- Learn basic management protocols for anesthesia-related emergencies and assist the dentist.
