Lost in Translation: Communication, Consultation, and Collaboration with Medical Colleagues

August 1, 2027 United States

About This Event

Medical consults are critically necessary to keep patients who are old and or chronically ill safe from harm. Older, sicker patients are often the people needing complex treatment that can be lengthy and stressful. Knowing when a medical consult is necessary, what information to provide, and which data to request is a requisite skill. Obtaining a clearance often falls far short of the standard of care treatment. It does not absolve the dentist from 100% responsibility for the patient’s welfare, and it can result in a preventable tragedy. This course will outline what it takes to communicate with your medical colleagues in a sensible, structured way to obtain useful guidance.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the role of PCPs in managing medically complex patients and understand how to support them effectively
  • Recognize when to obtain a consultation for treating patients with complex medical histories
  • Analyze diverse care examples to enhance understanding of managing complex medical cases collaboratively.
