Optimizing CAD/CAM-Generated Ceramic Restorations: Enhancing Performance Through Deeper Understanding – Part I: Scan and Design

March 21, 2026 Portland, USA

About This Event

With the recent advancement in digital dental technologies and dental materials, the use of CAD/CAM-generated ceramic restorations has been rapidly increasing. Today, there are many CAD/CAM systems and workflows available for the manufacture of highly accurate dental restorations at a relatively low cost. However, outcomes of CAD/CAM ceramic restorations are sometimes suboptimal due to poor understanding on technologies. This presentation will review basic principles of intraoral and extraoral scanning that clinicians should know about to control the accuracy of digitization. Scanning strategies and indications/contraindications of intraoral and extraoral scanning will be discussed based on recently published studies and various clinical case examples. Computer-Aided Design principles of various types of dental restorations will also be discussed to help attendees understand important considerations and newer computer-aided design technology. Various clinical examples will be presented to describe how the principles discussed in this presentation can be used to improve patient care outcome. Hands-on exercise will include intraoral scanning and computer-aided design exercise of various clinical examples including fixed, removable and implant prostheses. Trios4 (3shape) and Primescan (Cerec) will be used for the scanning and design project.
