Special Care Dentistry Symposium
About This Event
The Tufts Special Care Dental Clinics, formerly known as Tufts Dental Facilities, celebrate 50 years of operations continuously serving the dental needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across Massachusetts. The symposium on January 24th 2025 is designed to distill the accumulated experience and expertise of the Special Care Dental Clinics and to disseminate lessons learned. This CE course offers participants an opportunity to gain knowledge and practical skills that are necessary for incorporating successful and satisfying family-centered dental care to patients with IDD. Participants will receive 7 dental CE credits.
Learning Objectives
- Understand how to individualize treatment planning to satisfy family-centered care principles
- Learn what are the most common modifications to the dental clinic environment, communication protocols, dental materials, instruments and treatment techniques to better serve IDD patients
- Understand the role of inter-disciplinary team-based care and how to engage care givers as members of the team
- Grasp details of the transition from pediatric to adult care
- Learn how to incorporate hospital dentistry into treatment planning
- Embrace the role of tele-dentistry and home visits in prevention of new disease, new patient intake and regular oral hygiene maintenance
- Develop a deep understanding of the five most common IDD categories, both from a medical perspective and from a dental perspective
- Immerse into the augmented reality learning environment that Tufts students receive
