Students will gain expertise in the identification, selection, and application of surgical armamentarium, aseptic technique, sedation monitoring, and surgical protocols. The course also emphasizes best practices for infection prevention, patient preparation, and postoperative care. Ideal for dental professionals and surgical assistants, the curriculum integrates clinical standards with real-world applications to enhance surgical efficiency and patient safety.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and describe the appropriate surgical instruments for soft tissue, bone, suturing, retraction, and dental implant procedures
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the setup and passing of surgical instruments using safe and sterile techniques
  • Apply principles of asepsis and infection control, including sterilization methods, disinfection protocols, and universal precautions
  • Explain and implement proper techniques for surgical team preparation, including hand hygiene, gowning, gloving, and patient draping
  • Monitor and document patient vital signs during sedation using equipment such as pulse oximeters, EKGs, and capnography
  • Assist in surgical procedures such as exodontia, bone grafting, and dental implant placement, with appropriate chair positioning and lighting setup
  • Deliver postoperative instructions to patients with emphasis on hemostasis, pain control, dietary guidance, edema management, and oral hygiene
  • Understand and utilize suturing techniques and suture materials appropriate for various surgical contexts
  • Recognize and respond to complications such as prolonged bleeding or infection with proper intervention techniques
  • Maintain a sterile field and prevent cross-contamination throughout all phases of surgical care.
