Bleeding Disorders of Importance in Dental Care and Related Patient Management

Bleeding disorders are a challenge in the dental practice and knowledge of the physiology of coagulation and common hereditary conditions that may result in excessive bleeding or risk of thrombosis is essential. This course will discuss commonly prescribed antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications. The course will help in understanding the physiological coagulation system and its pathways. A description of hereditary conditions and the common factors that pose an increased risk for thrombosis and bleeding will be discussed. The course aims to provide information on safety and preventive measures to be taken by the dental care professional while providing urgent care to these patients. At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to: Understanding hemostasis and coagulation cascade; Pathogenesis of inherited and acquired bleeding disorders; Drugs and over the counter preparations that adversely affect hemostasis; Diagnostic tests and therapeutic approach in patients with increased risk of bleeding; Associated risk of impaired wound healing, postoperative infections, and their management.
