
The Opioids Epidemic: An Update and Review of the Role of Dentistry
About This Event
This course will cover an overview of the extent of the opioid epidemic in the US and its human and financial cost to society. It will examine the role of dentistry and dentists in the spread of the opioid epidemic, including old prescribing patterns and the contribution of dentists to the epidemic’s extent. The course will review state regulations on opioid prescribing and develop a better understanding of dental pain and pain management to change prescribing patterns. Finally, it will discuss the role of dentistry in combating the epidemic and addiction beyond changing prescribing patterns.

- Realize the role of dental professionals and healthcare providers in the current US opioid epidemic
- Review and interpretation of VBOD regulations on pain control prescribing
- Understand the risk factors of use of opioid analgesics in the development of SUDs in adults and adolescents
- Appraise the evidence-based management of dental pain
- How to manage patients with active SUD and patients in recovery from SUD in need of dental treatment.
